Pyramids in America
Pyramids In America The Grand pyramid at Cahokia. Also called Monk's Mound, it is just one of over 120 pyramids built near St. Louis. This earthen pyramid is larger at the base than the Great Pyramid in Egypt. Although this is reported to be the largest earthen pyramid in the Americas, there is one larger within the city of St. Louis. It is mostly unknown because monks built a church atop it, limiting public access. Ancient Pyramids were constructed of earth in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some were simple conical mounds like the silt pyramids found along the Nile Valley in Zimbabwe and the Sudan. Others were animal-shaped effigies, long embankments, fortifications and precise geometric configurations. Some sites formed gigantic solar clocks, stellar calendars, seasonal calculators and sacred burials grounds. Many were tall, 4-sided earthen platform pyramids or step pyramids. They may have served as astrological observatories, spiritual temples or living quarters for the rulers. They are all feats of engineering and architectural marvel. Some of the best known mound sites have been preserved as local, state or national parks. Many are concentrated in the Mississippi River Delta region, the Ohio River Valley and the surrounding Midwestern states. Much older sites can be visited in the Southeastern U.S. including sites in Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma and Arizona. -from MUUR Guide to Pyramids...in America NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD!
